Amar Din (My Day)

Amar Din (My Day) is a series of images captured using a disposable camera by a 9 year old girl called Shaki who lives in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Shaki’s mother works as maid and her father does various manual jobs to earn a living. Both parents have aspirations for their children to have better opportunities then they had growing up.

Shaki attended a school in Sylhet called Gosh Uddin Bisho Biddaloy. As a 9 year old she has ambitions to educate and work a professional job to help her escape the social class that she was born into.

Shaki captured images throughout her day at school with her friends and then later in her home setting. Shaki appears in some images as she is photographed by her friends who she taught to operate the camera.

This work was created to explore the life the artist could have led had her parents not been born into a different social class and had the option to migrate to the UK where they worked and resided.
